My Mother’s Altar: Joan Snyder Paints to Face Herself

Published in the Fall/Winter 2018 edition of the Woman’s Art Journal.

In the summer of 1969, Joan Snyder (b.1940), the renowned American artist, made what she considered to be her breakthrough painting. She painted Lines and Strokes in her New York City loft on Mulberry Street at the very same time that the Woodstock Music Festival was happening. Snyder was starting her own cultural revolution right in the center of her studio.
